One fall Friday evening my son and I were talking about the week and getting ready to jump into our own happy hour.  As I was looking through our bar supplies my son informed me that he had never had a Manhattan. I took this parenting opportunity to provide him with a proper Manhattan.  I grabbed the mixing glass, filled it with ice, poured a generous amount of rye whiskey, balanced it off with the right amount of sweet vermouth, and a couple drops of bitters.  After a few stirs I strained it into a chilled martini glass and garnished with a cherry.  We cheered to the hard week’s work and began our weekend.  The expression on his face was priceless as he exclaimed “Wow, delicious, and spirit forward!”

For those of you unfamiliar with the term spirit forward it is commonly used to describe the profile of a cocktail. Some drinks are sweet, some sour, and some strong or spirit forward.

The remainder of the evening was filled with reflective conversations regarding the importance of family.  Memories we shared of the past, plans for the present, and dreams of the future.  There was a calming vibe present as we enjoyed each other’s insight.

The vibe reminded me of the spirit forward moments shared at family gatherings the past few decades.  Also, the milestones with friends who are often referred to as chosen family.  The vibe can also be found with your favorite golfing foursome, as you celebrate the good shots and laugh at the blunders.

The spirit forward vibe is all around us.  It can be found in the innocence of youth, the first cup of coffee in the morning, the beauty of a sunset, or time with your loved ones.  Wherever you may find this vibe, live in the moment and hug your family.

Cheers!
